Program Services - Building Positive Futures

Building Positive Futures Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program

This program has a teen pregnancy prevention focus and is open to children from 10-14 years old in the 5th to 9th grades who are considered “at risk.” These children are exposed to many risk factors in their families and communities, which may lead them to teen pregnancy, educational failure, being a school dropout and juvenile delinquency. Schools program sites currently are Macfarland Middle School, Bruce-Monroe Elementary School and Hyde Leadership Public Charter School.

Building Positive Futures (BPF) support services include a variety of teaching methods designed to engage the young participants in individual and group activities. This after-school health curriculum is delivered by a health educator and includes information about sexual abstinence, teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, HIV/AIDS, peer pressure, conflict resolution and motivational information. Big Brother and Big Sisters individually help their Little Brothers and Little Sisters by reinforcing key prevention program objectives and assist youth to develop to their full potential.

This program is funded by the District of Columbia Human Services Department’s Income Maintenance Administration and in the past, financial supporters included the DC Children and Youth Investment Trust Corporation.
