STRESS FRACTURES by Kevin Dopart
Stress fractures are a slight crack in a bone -- are often the result of overuse or
repeated impacts on a hard surface. They are all too common with runners.
One of our RFK runners was recently diagnosed with a foot stress fracture,
so we thought it timely to highlight ways to avoid this type of injury.
See the links below, but simply stated: don’t increase weekly or long-run mileage
too quickly and wear shoes appropriate for your running style.
I recommend (without benefit of a clinical study) keeping two or more different
brands or models of running shoes in rotation. That is, switch from one pair
to another on successive runs. The subtle changes in biomechanics may be sufficient
to avoid repetitive motion injuries. Additionally, you should retire your shoes
when they’ve accumulated somewhere between 300-500 miles.
By the way, I had my first and only stress fracture twenty years ago . . .
before implementing the alternative shoe approach and the year I put 800 miles
on one pair of shoes.
