2014 Service to Youth Awards Honored Bigs of the Year, Emceed by WJLA News Anchor and Big Sister Alison Starling

Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, Big Brother of the Year, Nigel L. Jenkins, and Big Sister of the Year, Jessica Blum, were honored at the 23rd Annual “Service to Youth” Awards, November 18th. Also honored was Paul F. Bliss, retired President and CEO.

BBBSNCA annually recognizes Bigs of the Year who represent the dedication of the many One-To-One mentors who serve throughout the greater Washington region.

Big Brothers Big Sisters National Capital RegionNigel Jenkins, Big Brother of the Year, works for GSK Vaccines. Nigel has been matched with his Little Brother Mykel since 2011. Mykel’s parents died in 2006 so Mykel now lives with his grandmother.

“Nigel was an angel sent to Mykel,” says his grandmother, Shirley Armstrong. “Nigel takes time for Mykel to go on outings, football games, movies, and to meet his own family.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters National Capital RegionBig Sister of the Year is Jessica Blum works for the U.S. Department of State and has been matched with her Little Sister Stephanie for three years.

“As busy as she is,” says Stephanie’s mother, Janet Campoverde, “Jessica always finds precious time to spend with Stephanie, regardless of her busy professional and personal life.”

Paul Bliss served for 23 distinguished years with the organization. With the diversity of innovative program, thousands of One-To-One mentoring relationships were created for at-risk children and their families in the greater Washington region. BBBSNCA was recognized both nationally and locally as a high-performing mentoring organization with a strong record of program innovation.

This signature event of Big Brothers Big Sisters was emceed by Big Sister Alison Starling, also News Anchor at WJLA ABC-7. Rick “Doc” Walker, celebrity speaker, spoke about his own childhood , how important discipline is in the lives of young people, and the importance of family support. Doc is also a radio sports commentator and former member of the Washington Redskins 1982 Super Bowl Champions team and the “HOGS.”
