Basim & Darian

Basim became a Big Brother in 2009 to Little Brother Darian because he wanted to make a positive impact in someone’s life and share the lessons he learned from his father.

Rachel Pruitt, Darian’s mother, is a Test Engineer for Northrop Grumman and had just moved from Texas. She thought having Big Brothers in the lives of her two boys would help protect them and serve as additional support systems and role models.

Basim, born in Washington, DC of immigrant Palestinian parents grew up in Alexandria, VA. As a child he was often at work with his father. “People today are losing their sense of pride and heritage,” Basim said. “My father made sure that we kept those values alive in our family and in our business.” Under Basim’s management his father’s small family company has grown to the $39 million-a-year business, Michael & Son.

Darian has blossomed from shy and awkward to having more confidence. Basim makes sure Darian takes the time to help the less fortunate by engaging him in community service projects. He also attends Basim’s family barbeques, sometimes helps Basim at work, and enjoys boating with him.

Rachel’s heart warms when she says, “With Basim, I can’t tell the difference between his sons and my son when I see them together. Basim is such a family man.”
